M8 - Cashel to Mitchellstown & M8 - Mitchellstown to Fermoy (56Km)
The key features of the design of this project included the selection of the route based on engineering, cost and environmental grounds. The main elements impacting on the alignment were the Galltee Mountains the associated numerous mountain streams and side roads and the presence of karst features in the limestone rock. Active communications on the ground with the local landowners and a genuine attempt to minimize the impacts led to a high level of local acceptance of the scheme. An interesting feature was the procurement of a contractor at an early stage in the project process, pre statutory procedures, which gave time savings and cost certainty. The project includes 40km of grade-separated dual carriageway with 4 interchanges, 23 Bridges and 19 Culverts. The scope of work carried out by Halcrow Barry included route identification, route selection, preliminary design, EIS and CPO, conceptual design, construction supervision and contract documentation.
Subsequently Halcrow Barry was appointed to prepare the specimen design, procurement and construction supervision for the 16km from Mitchelstown to Fermoy.
