Cowper Care Centre (Baldoyle)
Client: Cowper Care Centre Ltd.
Design Team:
Architect: Ryan O'Brien Handy
M&E Consultant: Homan O'Brien Associates
Quantity Surveyor: Davis Langdon PKS
Project Value: €3.5 million
Project Description:
This project, on behalf of Cowper Care Centre Ltd proceeded in two phases. The first phase consisted of a 22 bed, 2 storey
extension to the rear of the existing St Patrick’s Nursing Home. The second phase consisted of a complete refurbishment
of the existing two storey Nursing Home along with some smaller related extensions. J. B. Barry and Partners Limited provided
Civil / Structural Engineering and PSDP Services from Planning Stage through Detailed Design and Construction Monitoring for
both phases.
The construction was phased in order to minimise disruption to the residents. With regard to phase one, the
ground conditions were poor, so a number of foundation options (piles, raft, ground improvement) were considered.
Spread foundations on vibro compacted stone columns were chosen for cost and simplicity reasons. To minimise disruption
on a site in use, precast and prefabricated elements were specified for the superstructure.
